Replacing Habits Not Breaking Habits

We have all been told we can break habits. I do not believe this to be true. To me, if this were true then someone who has quit smoking would never want to pick up a cigarette again. No urges, no cravings, no nothing. And how about someone who gets clean and sober? If they could break the habit, then they too would not have urges, cravings, the desire to get high or drunk. But this is not the case. This is not how this works. Habits cannot be broken. However, they can be replaced. Slowly, and with hard work, they can be replaced with healthier, more productive, and more sustainable habits. To me, this is how habits work. This is how life works. Ever learn how to spell a word the wrong way and have to unlearn the original way so you can learn the correct way? Isn’t that just replacing one habit with another habit that works better than the original habit? What habits do you have that you want to replace? What would you replace the original habit with? Just something to think about.

Namaste, my friends.
