Toxic Positivity

How can positivity be toxic? And how can toxicity be positive? The answer is simply they can’t exist together. And yet many of us have experienced toxic positivity from someone in our life. What is toxic positivity you ask? It is defined as the ineffective overgeneralization and excessiveness of a happy optimistic state across all situations in life. Toxic positivity actually has the negative effect resulting in minimization, denial, and invalidation of the authentic, emotional human experience.  What this means is the “positivity” someone is telling you is actually toxic and is being disguised as something good when it is actually negative. And to me, toxic positivity is more about the person saying it than the person receiving it. Either way, toxic positivity can be very damaging and hurtful. And this is why those 2 things can never go together in a healthy way.

Namaste, my friends.
