Distractions

We all get distracted from time to time. However, when we use distractions to avoid things we need to focus on, that is when distractions become problems. Distractions can include binge watching tv for hours on end, drinking alcohol in excess, taking drugs, eating too much, shopping in excess, and the list goes on and on. Now doing these things ever so often is not a problem. But when they are done in excess, that is where they become problems. They become distractions and take our attention away from what we need to pay attention to. And for most of us, we use distractions to move our focus away from our emotions. Especially the more negative and painful emotions such as sadness, grief, fear, and anxiety. The problem with not paying attention to our emotions is that the emotions become bigger and bigger rather than get smaller when we use distractions. It is being aware and acknowledging our emotions that helps us to reduce our emotions rather than using distractions. However, for most of us, we are “shown” that distractions are better than acknowledging. And that is a distraction in itself.

Namaste, my friends.
