Disappointments happen in life. They happen to all of us no matter what. That is just part of life. However, denial is something only humans do and it is a protection from the hurt of disappointment. And this is not healthy. Denial “appears” to protect us from pain and hurt. And that may be true in the moment however in the long run, all it does is create more pain and hurt. Denial keeps us from moving forward. It keeps us from connecting with self and with others. It creates isolation which is unhealthy because humans are herd animals and we need connections with others in order to thrive. We are taught to avoid disappointment, pain and hurt at any cost. However, the cost is our mental health, our connection with self and others, and a life that is thriving rather than surviving. Disappointment is part of life. Denial is not part of life and when you combine the 2 of them, you do not have a life.
